One will be going for gold.

The other will settle for a shot at bronze.

Two of the Calgary Flames' marquee forwards will square off in Saturday's semifinals at the world hockey championship in Denmark, with centre Mikael Backlund captaining Sweden against Johnny Gaudreau and Team USA.

Flames head-coaching hire Bill Peters will be behind Canada's bench in a clash with Switzerland in the other semifinal showdown.

Fresh off a career-best 84-point campaign and a fourth consecutive invite to the NHL's all-star weekend, Gaudreau collected one assist in Thursday's 3-2 quarterfinal triumph over the Czechs in Copenhagen. The 24-year-old Gaudreau now has one goal and eight helpers in eight tournament outings.

Backlund is wearing the 'C' for his national team for the first time. The 29-year-old didn't register on the scoresheet in a 3-2 quarterfinal victory versus Latvia but has contributed two tallies and four assists so far.

Peters, who was hired to replace Glen Gulutzan as skipper at the Saddledome, is aiming to add another medal to his collection. Now 53, he coached Team Canada to a golden moment at the world championship in 2016 and was an assistant on the winning staff at the World Cup of Hockey just a few months later.

Team Canada worked overtime to defeat Russia in Thursday's quarterfinal action, with Edmonton Oilers wunderkind Connor McDavid setting up Buffalo Sabres centre Ryan O'Reilly for the winner in a 5-4 squeaker.

Flames goalie David Rittich made three starts for the Czech Republic at the tournament but served as their backup as they were eliminated by Gaudreau and the Americans.

Rittich, 25, posted a 2-1 record, 1.98 goals-against average and .900 save percentage.
